Yesterday on the 7th November we had our billy cart day. There were 3 groups, I was in group 1 with Aaron, Carmen and Ashleigh. We joined with Harrison and Mason. When it was our turn to make our billy cart we made it red with #95- Lightning McQueen. On the back of the seat it said ciao! I came second in my home made billy cart.
Today we skyped Kamehameha Elementary School in Hawaii.
We were asking questions about Hawaii and its culture. We came up with some good questions for them and were surprised with the answers. We sang songs to each other. We sang ‘Hawaii’ and they sang a Christmas song called ‘Christmas in Paradise’. They also sang a thankyou song at the end.
They asked us some questions and they thought some of our answers were weird. They thought it was funny that we ate kangaroo. We found out they go on lots of excursions, and one of them was to a volcano park and lots of other places around the island. We also found out that it is normally raining over there and they speak American, not Hawaiian, most of the time. They live on the rainy side of their island.
The students showed us how to greet people in Hawaiian. They play basketball, football and soccer and baseball over there and they didn’t know what AFL was. We showed them what an Aussie Rules football looks like. They thought it looked a lot like their footballs. We also showed them some Australian money, a one dollar coin and a five dollar note and they had never seen it before. They said it was so different to ours.
We were shocked to see that they could take electronics into class and they took photos of us.
They asked us what food we ate and whether we ate wallabies, but we said we were not that cruel! We showed them pictures of a koala, which they seemed to think was pretty cute.
It was fun and we hope we can do it again! :)
Nude Food Day on PhotoPeach
Hi everyone.
The latest homework sheets have gone home today. They should be glued into your homework books.
THIS IS DUE MONDAY 28TH NOVEMBER.
Remember you have to complete the 2 A4 sheets AND complete one spelling task using you spelling words. Where do your spelling words come from?? Your reading and your writing.
Good luck and remember to CHECK IN WITH SIOBHAN IF YOU ARE STUCK!!!!!
This term we have made some changes to our homework organisation. Homework is given out EVERY TWO WEEKS – giving you 2 whole weeks to complete your tasks.
Your homework expectations are:
• Reading EACH NIGHT. This may be books, newspapers or magazines. I encourage you to practice reading aloud to brothers and sisters, and parents.
• Working with personal spelling lists. These lists will be based on words that come from your work – words you have trouble spelling in your writing or words you come across in your reading. Choose a spelling activity from the chart in your homework books to complete each fortnight.
• HOMEWORK CONTRACTS: This is a new homework format for our class. It is an A3 sheet and it includes; English, Maths, Science and other subjects. Homework contracts are designed to give you a basis for some of the work you will experience next year whether that is moving into Grade 5 or 6 or Year 7. As this format of homework may be more than many of you are used to I have extended the due date to every two weeks. If you have any difficulties or problems – come and see me.
I have also given everyone a log-in for www.studyladder.com.au
This is a great website which lets you practice maths and literacy skills through games and activities. You can log-in from home or school.
On Mondays we will go through the tasks on the homework contract and stick these in your homework books. This is a good opportunity to ask me any questions about your homework, but you can also ask me during the week if you get stuck. Remember, you have 2 weeks to clear up any confusion with me – DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE!
Last term we talked about what happens if students don’t complete their homework or have it ready to hand in. As a class we decided that these students would move down a step on the ladder and would have to complete their homework during recess or lunchtime. This will be the same consequence this term, however remember there is opportunity to move up the ladder for great work and organisation.
In our grade we have been thinking about how our actions have an impact on our environment. We have also been learning how to use ‘fishbone’ diagrams to show cause and effect. This fishbone diagram shows some of the things we know that can cause harm to our environment.
CERES 2011 on PhotoPeach
Didn’t we have a lovely time the day we went to CERES… on PhotoPeach
Over the last week we have been reading and writing about the water cycle. Some of the boys have created visual representations of the water cycle using Paint and other programs on the netbooks. Enjoy!
